This age can be called the Geospatial Information Age because over eighty percent of all data has a geospatial component. The importance of geospatial data for the nation and the globe is elaborated by Executive Order 12906, in which geospatial data is defined as "information that identifies the geographic location and characteristics of natural or constructed features and boundaries on earth. This information may be derived from, among other things, remote sensing, mapping, and surveying technologies. Statistical data may be included in the definition at the discretion of the collection agency. This site is created to educate and train public about the sciences, software, technologies, applications, and people involved with geospatial data. To explain and demonstrate geospatial data, Santa Monica Bay's environmental geology, geography, oceanography, and urbanization will be used.
