Geospatial Data Age |
| This age can be called the Geospatial Information Age because over eighty percent of all data has a geospatial component. The information about the objects and phenomena that fills the space between the core of the earth and the Sun are crucial to the functioning of any government, business and educational institution. The data about the location and characteristics of natural resources such as rocks, minerals, oil , natural gas, soil, life forms, ecosystems, air ,land, and water are vital. Furthermore, the information about the location and attributes of constructed or cultural resources such as buildings, roads, rail roads and airports is indispensable.

National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) |
The importance of geospatial data for the nation and the globe is elaborated in the executive order that established the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) in which geospatial data is defined as "information that identifies the geographic location and characteristics of natural or constructed features and boundaries on earth. This information may be derived from, among other things, remote sensing, mapping, and surveying technologies. Statistical data may be included in the definition at the discretion of the collection agency". The goal of this site is to educate the public about the sciences, software, data, technologies, applications, and people involved with geospatial data using online resources. The terms spatial, geospatial, and geographic are used interchangeably. |
